Porcelain veneers are thin layers of ceramic material that can be chemically bonded to the tooth structure, and are the primary treatment modality for the extreme makeover shows.  To apply a veneer, a very small layer of the original tooth enamel is removed and then the porcelain veneer is bonded to the tooth with a light-sensitive resin.  The bonding strength between a customized porcelain veneer and the tooth surface is tremendous, and after bonding, porcelain veneer materials display similar physical properties as natural enamel. Another benefit is that with veneers, your natural teeth remain largely intact with only a minimal amount being altered as opposed to crowns. In addition, with the advance of ceramic technology, the translucency of natural teeth can be perfectly mimicked.
